USDA Weekly Crop Progress

OMAHA (DTN) -- Soybean harvest increased by 7 percentage points and corn harvest rose 5 percentage points in the week ended Sept. 28, according to USDA's latest Crop Progress report.

Ten percent of the nation's soybeans are in the bin, compared to 3% last week and a 17% five-year average. Soybean conditions improved slightly.

"USDA's good-to-excellent rating of 72% increased the DTN Soybean Condition Index from 173 to 178, which is still far above 120 from a year ago and the five-year average of 120.7," said DTN Analyst Todd Hultman. "Monday's report should be viewed as bearish as the crop rating remains exceptionally high for this late in the season."

Cory Ritter, who farms in the center of Illinois near Blue Mound, said harvest has been speeding along for his operation, but there might be some trouble down the road when everybody is trying to get to the elevator.

"We have been running for 13 straight days," Ritter emailed DTN. "We are 60% done with beans; tomorrow (Tuesday) we will catch all the beans that are currently ready.

"Yields have been good -- 10 to 15 bushels above the five-year average. Corn is one-third complete. Logistic issues at elevators are starting show up with reduced hours. Planning when to go to town and when to go to bins is going to be a big factor in wrapping up harvest 2014! [Corn] yields are 50-75 bu above five-year average."

Twelve percent of the corn crop is harvested, compared to 7% last week and a 23% five-year average. Forty percent of U.S. corn still is not mature. Corn condition held steady in the past week.

"USDA's good-to-excellent rating of 74% for corn resulted in a DTN Corn Condition Index of 181, the same as a week ago and still far above 131 a year ago and above the five-year average of 90.6," Hultman said. "This report should be viewed as bearish for corn as Monday's uncommonly high crop rating continues to point to a record harvest."

Winter wheat is 43% planted and 14% emerged, compared to five-year averages of 36% and 12%, respectively. Spring wheat harvest is nearly complete at 94% complete.

"Monday's report should be viewed as neutral to bearish due to the good pace of winter wheat planting," Hultman said.

Cotton is 10% harvested and 64% of plants have bolls opening. That compared to 8%and 58% last week and 5-year averages of 13% and 70%. Cotton condition improved slightly. Rice is 59% harvested.
